REMETTE PORTABLE
TYPEWRITER, c.1950 An ordinary typewriter. What's On at City Museum at Old Treasury Melbourne / Current Exhibitions MELBOURNE, AND OTHER MYTHS See the city in a strange new light as Melbourne and Other Myths infects the City Museum this autumn. Bear witness to the lives of three Melbourne eccentrics as they explain their unique visions of the city. Through the stories of these odd characters, illustrated with sounds, images and curious artefacts, the exhibition explores Melbourne's urban myths and impossible secrets. Other surprises – some fact, some fiction – will leave unsuspecting visitors seeing familiar landmarks in peculiar new ways. Melbourne, and Other Myths combines the work of acclaimed Melbourne writer Martyn Pedler and animations from screen collective TAPE Projects, pollinated with still photography from three of Melbourne’s leading photographers. These disparate ingredients coalesce in a bizarre, at times hallucinatory journey through the secret histories of Melbourne, where the authenticity of the museum – and perhaps the very fabric of the city itself – is thrown into question. Melbourne. Maybe it's not where you think. Exhibition Partners:
Melbourne, and Other Myths coincides with the release of three intriguing
new publications, made possible by the generous support of Chase and Galley: Making Melbourne Tracing the story of the city from early settlement to the present day. Built on Gold The story of Victoria’s gold, its journey and legacy in the years 1852-1862. Growing Up in the Old Treasury Recreating the caretaker’s apartments, as occupied 1916-1928. Gold and Prosperity The Vizard Foundation collection of colonial gold and silver. / Coming Up AUSTRALIAN RULES: Australian Rules: Around the Grounds turns away from the centre bounce to celebrate the action taking place around the boundaries of our national football code. In this era of football professionalism, where the analysis of matches, coaches and players extends the parameters of the code into seemingly ever-expanding levels of complexity, the MGA has brought together photographers who capture the action away from the media spotlight. Australian Rules: Around the Grounds features the work of five photographers: Donna Bailey, Paul Dunn, Rennie Ellis, Grant Hobson and Jesse Marlow.
